Peter Nižňanský
Peter Nižňanský was born on 7 July 1956 in Dunajská Streda, Slovakia. After graduating from the stone sculpture programme at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Bratislava, he unsuccessfully applied three times to the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. He was, however, accepted on his first attempt to the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he graduated in 1984 under Professor Stanislav Hanzík Bradáček.
Nižňanský’s work is rooted in the enduring values of classical sculpture. His artistic language draws primarily from figurative traditions and makes extensive use of time-honoured materials such as bronze and tin. Rather than pursuing contemporary trends for their own sake, he remains committed to a thoughtful and deeply personal artistic vision.
His creative process is characterised by careful reflection and an interest in broader philosophical and existential questions. In many ways, he approaches sculpture as a poet approaches language, seeking connections between the human figure and the wider universe.
The female figure has long been his central theme and enduring source of inspiration. At the same time, he also explores abstraction and sports-related subjects, through which he is able to express movement, energy and the dynamics of form.
For many years, he operated the respected Pyramida Gallery on Prague’s Národní Avenue, providing exhibition opportunities for numerous Slovak artists and contributing significantly to cultural exchange between the Czech and Slovak artistic communities.
Following numerous exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad, Nižňanský introduced his work to the Slovak art public in 2014 through a joint exhibition with the distinguished Czech graphic artist Oldřich Kulhánek.
Since completing his studies, Peter Nižňanský has lived and worked in Prague, where he continues to develop his artistic practice.
