František Bohunický
František Bohunický was born on 26 March 1983 in Bratislava, Slovakia. He studied Exhibition Design and Promotional Art at the Private Secondary School of Arts in Bratislava and later graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, where he studied sculpture under Professor Juraj Meliš and Associate Professor Ján Hoffstädter.
In 1997, while still a student, he began attending the studio of sculptor Oto Bachorík. Over the course of ten years spent in the studio, he gained extensive practical experience, focusing primarily on bronze sculpture and casting techniques.
For many years, Bohunický devoted himself to figurative sculpture, particularly representations of children. Through these works, he explored the fragility of human relationships, family bonds and the emotional dimensions of everyday life. At the same time, his artistic language also embraces reduced and often austere geometric forms that evolve into symbolic structures through which he comments on contemporary life and human experience.
His works are distinguished by a unique combination of poetry, mystery, irony and subtle sarcasm. This distinctive perspective became particularly evident in 2011, when he entered the public space of Bratislava with a series of interventions entitled Deforma. In these projects, he reinterpreted familiar urban objects that had lost their original function, playfully transforming them and assigning them new meanings.
In 2023, he was nominated for the Crystal Wing Award (Krištáľové krídlo) in the category of Visual Arts. He is also the author of the memorial commemorating the tragic traffic accident in Podivín, Moravia.
Today, Bohunický is fully dedicated to sculptural practice, working freely across a wide range of materials, including bronze, steel, wood, plastic and paper. Regardless of the medium, his work remains united by a strong conceptual foundation, technical mastery and a distinctive poetic imagination.
