Roman Romanyshyn
Roman Romanyshyn comes from western Ukraine and was born on 13 July 1957 in the town of Tlumach. He received his professional artistic education in Lviv, first at the Lviv College of Applied Arts and later at the Lviv State Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts, where he studied between 1973 and 1982.
His artistic career began with the creation of small-scale graphic compositions using a technique of his own, inspired by traditional Ukrainian painting methods that employed natural pigments and wax. Later, he discovered the medium of etching, which became his principal artistic passion for many years.
Because colour has always played a fundamental role in his artistic expression, Romanyshyn gradually began experimenting with multiple etching plates and the sequential layering of coloured impressions. Through this process, he developed a highly distinctive and recognisable visual language that became one of the defining features of his work.
With graphic works created in this unique technique, he has held more than ninety solo exhibitions in Ukraine, throughout Europe, and in countries including the United States, Canada, China, Japan and South Korea. He has also participated in numerous international exhibitions, receiving many awards and distinctions for his artistic achievements.
Beyond printmaking, his artistic practice encompasses painting, sculpture in bronze and wood, kinetic sculpture, objects and collage. His work is characterised by a remarkable diversity of themes and influences, ranging from ancient and contemporary mythology to philosophy, religion, poetry and music.
Romanyshyn is particularly drawn to artworks rich in symbolism, hidden meanings and layered narratives. He is fascinated by the interplay between harmony and deliberate disharmony, creating works that invite viewers to explore multiple levels of interpretation and association.
At the heart of his artistic vision lies a belief in the power of imagination, metaphor and cultural memory. His works encourage contemplation and dialogue, revealing ever new meanings through their complex structures, visual poetry and rich network of associations.
