Jakub Bachorík

Jakub Bachorík was born on 27 December 1980 in Bratislava, Slovakia. After studying at the Secondary School of Applied Arts, he spent a year at Huron Heights Secondary School in Toronto, Canada. In 2010, he graduated from the Department of Sculpture, Object and Installation at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, where he studied under Professors Juraj Meliš and Jozef Hoffstädter.

He comes from a family with deep artistic roots. His grandfather Otakar was active in painting and ceramics, while his grandfather Štefan worked as a textile artist. His mother, Zuzana Bachoríková, is known primarily for her figurative drawings and paintings, many of which are inspired by the atmosphere and light of coastal landscapes. His father, Oto Bachorík, is regarded as one of Slovakia’s leading sculptors.

In many ways, Jakub’s artistic journey continues and develops the creative legacy of both his parents. His work combines sensitivity to figurative form with a strong sense of narrative and imagination.

In 2024, he was selected as one of the three finalists for the Crystal Wing Award (Krištáľové krídlo), and he is also a recipient of the Martin Benka Award, one of Slovakia’s respected distinctions for young visual artists.

His artistic practice encompasses painting, printmaking, design and sculpture. Nevertheless, sculpture remains his principal medium, with bronze occupying a central place in his work. His passion for fishing frequently finds its way into his artistic themes, while literature also serves as an important source of inspiration. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince, for example, inspired a six-part series of miniature planets, reflecting the poetic and imaginative qualities that characterise much of his work.

Jakub Bachorík lives and works in Devín, a historic district of Bratislava.
